We will find ourselves trapped in the backstage of a big theatre witnessing the duel between Lensky and Eugene. We will live the final moments of the last pharaoh of Egypt, consuming the nectar of her demise. We will passionately dance alongside Carmen over a bed of carnation to conquer a lover’s heart.
4 TRAGEDIES IN AN ACT is a film that intertwines the climatic points of four major operas; Anthony & Cleopatra, Eugene Onegin, Carmen and Turandot. These are stories which cannot be realized unless you venture into the opera house Gran Teatre del Liceu.
In order to authentically connect with the past and the idea of reliving these great stories, we decided to shoot in 35mm. We were searching for a medium that would capture the melancholic textures of these epic dramas. Ultimately, we had to move away from digital to achieve images with more visual character and nuanced complexities.

“They say it’s no longer time for great stories. You no longer vindicate past crimes. You no longer fight duels at dawn. You don’t believe in the love of a rebellious bird. Poison no longer quenches your thirst for immortality.”
